In this episode, Coach Damon Wilson sits down with California native and Duke University starting goalie Sophia LeRose. Sophia shares her incredible journey from stepping into the cage for the first time in San Diego to making a legendary walk-off save in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
She dives deep into her "free-spirited" development as an athletic goalie, her rigorous recruiting process, the transition to East Coast lacrosse, and the mental grit required to overcome major injuries and technical overhauls.
The Origin Story: Sophia started playing lacrosse in 6th grade in San Diego. When her team’s goalie showed up late to a game at Rancho Bernardo High School, she volunteered to step in.
Fearless Mentality: Having a twin brother and growing up playing sports with boys meant getting hit by balls didn't intimidate her. Instead, she fell in love with leading the defense and having a vision of the entire field.
The 35-Day Summer Marathon: To secure a collegiate roster spot, Sophia embarked on a grueling 35-day solo travel stretch, bouncing from camp to camp and tournament to tournament across the country.
The West Coast Advantage: While some view coming from a non-traditional lacrosse state as a disadvantage, Sophia leveraged it. By being a standout athletic goalie on the West Coast, she positioned herself as a "big fish in a small pond" to capture the attention of top-tier academic and athletic programs on the East Coast.
Choosing Duke: After falling in love with Duke in elementary school, a stellar summer camp performance earned her an offer from Head Coach Kerstin Kimel.
The Transition from "Winging It" to Technical Mastery: In high school, Sophia relied entirely on natural athleticism. Arriving at Duke was a reality check. She had to strip down her game, break bad habits, and learn technical positioning, angles, and hand-driving mechanics.
Trusting the Process: This transition came with a temporary slump during her freshman year. She emphasizes the importance of pushing through the frustration and letting technical fundamentals transition into unconscious muscle memory.
Double Shoulder Surgery: Sophia played through an entire season with shoulder issues before undergoing bilateral shoulder surgery.
The 90% Mental Game: Sophia shares her highly disciplined rehab routine (rehab blocks, anti-inflammatory diet, constant icing) and explains why maintaining a strong, process-oriented mindset is the key to successfully returning from physical setbacks.
Sophia humorously compares her laid-back California roots with the fast-paced East Coast culture and the incredibly polite mannerisms she adopted while living in the South.
"I never looked at it as 'I have to go play.' It was: 'I get to go visit Duke and meet with these coaches. I get to go play at this camp and enjoy myself.' Just switching that mentality made the process so much better."
"In high school, my coach told me: 'Make the save. Do whatever you have to do to make the save.' When I came to Duke, it was a good wake-up call... I had to really sit back, trust the process, and break old habits to build long-term success."
The Event: 17 elite lacrosse coaches gathered for a massive 4-day virtual training event packed with mental-game strategies, agility drills, clearing techniques, and stick-stringing tutorials.
