LGR 187: Important Mental Lessons for Goalies with former Wagner netminder Matt Sefick

Coach Damon Wilson

Show notes

In this episode of the Lax Goalie Rat Podcast, host Coach Damon Wilson sits down with former Division 1 lacrosse goalie Matt Sefcik. Matt played his college ball at Wagner College on Staten Island and is a guest contributor to the Lax Goalie Rat blog.

Now pursuing his PhD in clinical psychology, Matt bridges the gap between biological performance and sports psychology. He shares crucial mental frameworks, coping mechanisms for slumps, the dynamic of the goalie room, and why a goalie’s job is only halfway done after making a save.

Key Takeaways & Episode Highlights
1. Falling in Love with the Position (and the Power of Tennis Balls)
Trial by Fire: Like many younger siblings, Matt was thrown into the net by his older brothers simply so they had someone to shoot on.

Managing Fear Early: Matt strongly advocates for using tennis balls or soft lacrosse balls when coaching young players. Getting constantly bruised early on ruins a kid's love for the position; soft balls allow them to develop hand-eye coordination and confidence without the physical pain.

2. Ditching the "Absolutes"
Avoid Good/Bad Buckets: Goalies have a habit of labeling a performance as an absolute "good game" or "bad game". Matt explains that multiple opposing realities can exist at once—you can play poorly but your team wins, or you can play phenomenally and still lose. Breaking film down into hyper-specific details keeps you grounded.

Shift the Pressure: Instead of stepping into the cage thinking "I have to save this ball," flip the script to "the shooter has to score on me." It puts the onus of perfection back onto the offense.

3. In-Game Grounding: The 5-4-3-2-1 Technique
When you find your mind drifting, or get trapped in your own head after giving up a goal, Matt recommends a classic clinical psychological grounding exercise to reset:

5 things you can see around the field.

4 things you can touch (your pipe, your stick tape, the turf beneath your feet).

3 things you can hear (the ref's whistle, a coach, your stick hitting the pipe).

2 things you can smell (the crisp air, your smelly goalie gloves).

1 thing you can taste (water, or in Matt’s unique case, a sideline Dr Pepper!)

4. Clears Are Half the Job
Making a spectacular save means nothing if you follow it up with a turnover. Your job is only halfway done when the ball hits your mesh.

The Golden Rule of Clears: It is always better to over-throw your clearing target than to under-throw them. An under-throw creates chaos right on your doorstep, whereas an over-throw simply sails safely out of bounds.

5. Managing Slumps and Burnout
Slumps are an inevitable part of competitive sports. When you're struggling, get back to the basics, ask for soft lobster shots in warm-ups to rebuild muscle memory, and avoid using the words "should" or "shouldn't."

Disconnect to Reconnect: Take a step away from the game during the off-season. Matt spent his summers surfing and skimboarding to completely refresh his mental stamina.
